    Why This Recipe Works:

Kid-Friendly: A fun activity for little hands to help with decorating.

Festive: Perfectly themed decorations bring Halloween magic to every bite.

Easy: Simple steps make these donuts accessible for any home baker.

Versatile: Customize toppings and colors to fit your spooky style.

Similar to my easily customizable Halloween Rice Krispies, Halloween Popcorn Balls, Halloween Pretzel Rods, and these fun Halloween Oreo Cookies, these Halloween donuts can be made into any Halloween design!

What You Need for Halloween Donuts

    • Donuts: I love to use a combination of glazed, chocolate dipped, filled, and even bars! You can use any combination of your favorites!
    • Candy Melts: For all the different monsters and decorations, I used Purple, Green, and Bright White Candy Melts. If the candy melts don't melt super smooth, I like to add a little shortening or refined coconut oil to help!
    • Frosting: The Dracula design uses black frosting (use store-bought or make your own with my dark chocolate frosting and some black food coloring gel!).
    • Extra Decorations: Candy Eyes, Plastic Fangs, Edible Red Gel Icing (as fake blood), and your Favorite Halloween Sprinkles were all used to make the various donuts.
    • Decorating Items: I used a number of different piping tips and piping bags to make decorating easy and with less mess! The tips I used are Wilton #104, #8, and #3.

    How to Make Halloween Donuts:

    1. Step 1: Melt your candy melts. I like to work with only one or two colors at a time.

    1. Step 5: Then pipe on the hair using the #8 piping tip and the stitches using the #3 piping tip.

    Mummy Donuts

adding candy melt to the back of a candy eye before placing it on a glazed donut.
    1. Step 6: Add a little melted candy melt to the back of each eye and place them on the donut

    1. Step 7: Pipe on the bandages using a #104 tip- I like to start around the eyes and then crisscross the bandages.

    Halloween Donut Decorating Tips

    • Tidy: Organize your decorating area. Get your candy melts melted for what you will be decorating first, your sprinkles in their own bowls, and piping bags and tips ready.
    • Plan: Have a plan for which Halloween Donuts you will decorate first and what needs to have sprinkles added before the candy melts set, and what needs to be decorated after the candy melts have set.
    • Melting Candy Melts: Place candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl with 1 tablespoon refined coconut oil or shortening.  Microwave for 30 seconds at 50% power, stir, and repeat until melted. If it's not smooth enough, add in more coconut oil/shortening 1 teaspoon at a time until you get the consistency you want.
    • Freshness: For the best-tasting donuts, decorate the same day you are serving them!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Store Bought or Homemade Black Frosting?

Store-bought black frosting can be found in the baking aisle or the cake decorating aisle and comes in a tube. You will probably need several tubes to decorate these.

Homemade black frosting is easy to make and delicious. Just make my chocolate frosting or dark chocolate frosting and add black food gel to it.

Can I Use Black Food Gel Icing for Halloween Donuts?

I recommend against it. Gel Icing doesn't like to set up and the amount you need to decorate is a lot.

How to Store Decorated Halloween Donuts?

Sometimes I like to use the large cardboard box the donuts come in if I am serving the donuts fairly soon after decorating. Otherwise, a large container with a lid that won't touch the tops of the donuts is what I use.

    Instructions

    • Line 1 or 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Place decorated donuts on these to dry.

    For the Monster Donuts:

    • Melt your purple and green colored candy melts with 1 tbs coconut oil or shortening each. I recommend heating for 30 seconds in the microwave at 50% power, stirring, and repeating until melted. You can even take it out of the microwave when there are still a few lumps and let it sit for about a minute, then stir. The residual heat should melt the remaining candy melts. If the candy melts are still too thick, stir in more coconut oil, 1 teaspoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. You don't want to overheat the candy melts and cause them to burn and get clumpy.
6 oz Green Candy Melts, 2-4 tbs refined coconut oil, 6 oz Purple Candy melts
    • Dip your donuts face down into the candy melts and then press on the eyes and sprinkle with sprinkles. Then set onto the prepared baking sheet.

While drying divide black frosting between two piping bags, one bag with the #8 writing tip and the other with the #3 writing tip. You will need more frosting in the bag with the #8 tip.

    Notes

    Tips and Tricks

Candy Melts: Different brands tend to melt slightly differently sometimes. You can use refined or unrefined coconut oil for the candy melts, but refined does not leave a coconut taste, which is what I prefer. Or use shortening!

    Mummy Donuts:

You want the candy melts to be on the slightly thicker side because you want it to look like strips of bandages.
If the candy melts are too liquid/thin, the candy melts mummy bandages will just blend together and that's not the look you want- then they might turn into happy ghosts!

    Black Frosting:

You can make your own from scratch using my chocolate buttercream recipe and adding black food gel, or buy several tubes of premade black frosting from the store.
Nutrition is an estimate and will vary based on how you decorate your donut.
