Simple and fun! Just make circles!

Black frosting? From scratch vs store bought.

I’ve used both. They both work well and taste fine. If you make black frosting from scratch simply make my chocolate frosting and add black food gel to it.

These Spider Web Donuts turned out so pretty!

Store bought black frosting can be found in the baking isle or the cake decorating isle and comes in a tube. You will probably need several tubes to decorate these.

You can also use some edible black gel (found in the same place as the black frosting) for the stitches but just remember the edible gel doesn’t harden making it have the potential for more mess.

The teeth will open up- but do stay in the donut.

What are the piping tip sizes that I use?

  • Size 8 writing tip for the Frankenstein and Dracula Hair
  • Size 3 writing tip for the Frankenstein stitches
  • Size 104 petal tip for the Mummy wrappings

These Mummies look like they are screaming with fright!

How to melt candy melts:

Place candy melts in a microwave safe bowl with 1 tablespoons refined coconut oil or shortening.  Microwave for 30 seconds at 50% power, stir and repeat until melted.

If it’s not smooth enough add in more coconut oil/shortening 1 tsp at a time until you get the consistency you want.

There is a point where you’ve microwaved the melts too much and they burn and become crumbly and are past the point of use, that’s why I recommend only microwaving inf 30 second interval.

I’ve noticed different brands and even different microwaves can melt the candies differently.

I love how the Frankenstein Monsters turned out!

Instructions

  • Line 1 or 2 baking sheets with parchment paper- set aside.

For the Monster Donuts:

  • Melt your purple and green colored candy melts with 1 tbs coconut oil or shortening each. I recommend heating for 30 seconds in the microwave at 50% power, stirring, and repeat until melted. You can even take it out of the microwave when there are still a few lumps and let is sit for about a minute then stir. The residual heat should melt the remaining candy melts. If the candy melts are still too thick stir in more coconut oil 1 tsp at a time until you reach your desired consistency. If the candy melts are still too thick stir in more coconut oil 1 tsp at a time until your reach your desired consistency. You don’t want to overheat the candy melts and cause it to burn and get clumpy.

  • Dip your donuts face down into the candy melts and place on lined baking sheet. Press on the eyes. Then allow dipped donuts to dry (about 3-5 minutes).
While drying divide black frosting between two piping bags, one bag with the #8 writing tip and the other with the #3 writing tip. You will need more frosting in the bag with the #8 tip.

  • Pipe on the hair using the #8 tip.

For Mummy Donuts

  • Melt your white candy melts and 1 tbs coconut oil or shortening. I recommend heating for 30 seconds in the microwave at 50% power, stirring, and repeat until melted. You can even take it out of the microwave when there are still a few lumps and let is sit for about a minute then stir. The residual heat should melt the remaining candy melts. If the candy melts are still too thick stir in more coconut oil 1 tsp at a time until your reach your desired consistency. You don’t want to overheat the candy melts and cause it to burn and get clumpy.
If using white frosting instead of candy melts no need to heat just skip to next step.

  • Pour candy melts (or frosting) into a piping bag with the #104 piping tip. Place a little melted candy melt on the back of the eyes and place them on the donut.

Notes

Lisa’s Tips and Tricks

For melting the candy melts:

  • Place candy melts in a microwave safe bowl with 2 tablespoons refined coconut oil. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir and repeat until melted.
  • By melted I mean kind of stiff and hard to stir- probably not smooth and runny. Then add in more coconut oil 1 tbs at a time until you get the consistency you want.
  • Some times I've added 4 or 6 tablespoons to get the candy melts liquid enough. There is a point where you've microwaved the melts too much and they burn and become crumbly and are past the point of use, that's why I recommend only microwaving inf 30 second interval.
  • I've noticed different brands and even different microwaves can melt the candies differently.
You can use refined or unrefined coconut oil for the candy melts but refined does not leave a coconut taste- which is what I prefer.

Mummy Donuts:

You want the candy melts to be on the slightly thicker side because you want it to look like strips of bandages.
If the candy melts are too liquid and thin the candy melt mummy bandages will just blend together.

Black Frosting:

You can make your own from scratch using my chocolate buttercream recipe and adding black food gel or buy several tubes of premade black frosting from the store.
