I recently shared how to chop cilantro, how to cut cantaloupe, and now I want to share how I cut parsley!

    What is parsley?

Parsley is a tasty herb that you can add to lots of sauces, marinades, turkeys, and as a nice garnish!

It provides tasty flavor and pops of beautiful color!

I love the bright green color of parsley! So pretty!

What kinds of parsley are there?

There are several types of parsley but two main types of parsley found here in the US- the flat and curly leaf versions.

The flat leaf is the most popular and is slightly peppery and bitter.

Curly leaf has a slightly milder flavor and is recognized my it’s curly/ruffled leaves.

flat leaf vs curly leaf parsley.
I love using both flat and curly parsley in recipes!

    How to chop parsley?

    • Rinse the parsley under water and then pat dry.
    • Try to align the parsley so the stems are all facing the same direction, leaving the leave tops all in a bunch. Sometimes separating some of the leaves from the stems helps to line everything up.
    • Twist the head of the parsley bunch off of the stems or use a knife to separate the leafy head from the stems.

Chopping parsley is really easy to do!
    • The stems are the parts that don’t have leaves on them, they are thicker, and are typically discarded or used for making broths.
    • Chop the parsley to your desired consistency.
    • Start as the top of the parsley bunch and with a rocking motion, chop the parsley from top to bottom, then from side to side.

While chopping I like to pull out bigger pieces of the stems that may be part of the top portion of the bunch.

You can chop parsley as fine as you want!

Pro Tip: Use a sharp knife to chop parsley! I like to use a large chef’s knife for easy of use and control. Just make sure to not cut yourself.

    How to finely chop parsley?

Use a sharp knife and go back and forth over your cut parsley multiple times, cutting it into smaller pieces each pass.

I I use larger pieces for marinades and small pieces for sauces!

    How to store parsley?

Store chopped parsley in a Ziploc baggie in the refrigerator with a damp paper towel. Use within 3-4 days.

Parsley can last much longer if you don’t store it chopped.

Simply rinse the parsley when you bring it home from the store, cut of the ends of the stems then place entire bunch in a cup or jar half way full of water in the refrigerator. Parsley will easily last a week or more stored this way.

Store uncut parsley in a water filled cup for longer lasting herbs!

Is parsley and coriander the same?

Nope. Coriander is cilantro and is a different herb.

Can I chop parsley in a blender or food processor?

I recommend using a food processor since they don’t require liquid to use. It will chop it quickly and might even puree it, so make sure to watch the processor carefully.
