These hot cocoa bombs are so fun to use!

Have you seen the big hot cocoa bomb trend that has become popular? A chocolate sphere filled with hot cocoa powder and mini marshmallows.

Then you pour hot milk over the chocolate ball and it melts and mixes into a delicious cup of hot cocoa. It’s fun and delicious!

A perfect cup of Hot Cocoa every time!

You can buy hot cocoa bombs at Costco and other retailers- but they are so easy to make at home!

Plus, if you make your own you can use different chocolate flavors, decorate them, and add in extra fillings!

What you will need to make hot chocolate bombs:

  • Dome silicone mold (affiliate link)
  • Chocolate candy melts
  • Hot cocoa mix
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Chocolate Chips
melting the candy melts and adding to silicon mold

Make sure to cover the silicon mold with a lick layer of melted chocolate!

Where to get the dome silicone mold?

I bought mine off of Amazon! Here is the exact mold that I got! (affiliate link) . Just make sure that it’s a good size- mine has six domes with a diameter of 2 ¾ inches and a height/depth of 1 3/8th inches.

removing the shells from the silicon mold

If your chocolate shells break when you take them out just melt them down and try again!

How to make hot chocolate bombs:

  • Melt candy melts in the microwave (see tips on how to do this below)
  • Scoop a large spoonful into each dome and spread a thick layer over the entire dome
  • Allow chocolate to harden completely then gently remove each dome from the mold
  • Fill half of the domes with hot cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and mini marshmallow.
  • Using a hot plate or a heated pan, press an empty dome rim down onto the hot surface so it melts slightly
  • The press the melted edge against one of the filled chocolate domes. You might need to smooth out the chocolate edge/seam so the two halves stick together
  • Allow to cool completely – decorate with more candy melts if you want and enjoy!
Sticking the two sides of the chocolate bombs together

You just need to melt the rim of the chocolate shell a little.

How much milk should I use for the hot chocolate bombs recipe?

  • I found each bomb mixes well with ~1.5 cups of hot milk

Make sure to use really hot milk if you want the bomb to melt easily!

Hot cocoa bombs variations?

  • Classic Hot Cocoa- Hot Cocoa mix, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows
  • Mint Hot Cocoa- Hot Cocoa, crushed Andes Mints, mini marshmallows
  • Espresso Hot Cocoa- Hot Cocoa mix, instant espresso powder, butterscotch chips
  • Peppermint Hot Cocoa- Hot Cocoa mix, crushed peppermint bark, mini marshmallows
  • Use different colored candy melts for the chocolate shells
  • Decorate each chocolate bomb with candy melts and crushed peppermints, chocolate shavings, and sprinkles!

You can fill these with all sorts of fun combinations!

What if the domes break when removing them from the mold?

Simply place all broken chocolate shells in a microwave dish and remelt. Then reuse the chocolate to make new shells.

Why did the chocolate shells break?

This happens when you make the shell too thin or the chocolate isn’t set/hardened completely.

Decorating Hot Chocolate Bombs with white candy melts

Drizzle with white candy melts for a fun look!

How to melt candy melts?

Place candy melts in a microwave safe both. Microwave for 30 seconds at 50% power, stir and repeat until melted.

If your candy melts aren’t melting smoothly add 2 tsps of shortening or refined coconut oil, stir, microwave, and repeat.

I’ve found that candy melts melt differently based off of brand, weather they are freshly opened or have been exposed to the air (i.e. used half a bag of the candy melts and the left the opened bag out for a while).

If the candy melts are to the point where they are crumbly and chalky after microwaving them for a while then they are scorched and not able to be saved.

Hot Chocolate Bombs decorated

These are a tasty treat every time!

How to avoid fingerprints?

Fingerprints typically appear on the hot cocoa bombs when you are melting the edge of one half of the chocolate shell and sticking the two shells together.

To avoid fingerprints you can where food safe gloves.

How to store hot cocoa bombs?

Once formed store in a Ziploc baggie in a cool place. Just be careful to not stack anything on top of them so they don’t break.

Hot chocolate bombs are a great DIY gift too! Just place one in a clear gift bag and add some ribbon!
