    Why I Love This Recipe?

At various times in my life, I just havenโ€™t had a toaster and so I have had to figure out the best way to make the perfect toast!

This recipe solves any question on how to toast bread without a toaster- whether itโ€™s by broiling or baking! Your oven is your new best friend!

    What Goes Into This Recipe?

Bread: Use whatever bread you have sliced as thick or thin as you like!

    sliced sourdough on baking sheet.
toasted bread slices on white plate.
Different types of bread might take a little more or less time to toast.

    toasted sourdough on baking sheet.
    1. Step 3: Once oven is preheated place baking sheet on the oven rack and broil bread for 1 minute, flip and broil for 30 seconds. Once one side is toasted flip and toast the other side.

    Does the Bread Type Matter?

Yes. Different breads have different moisture contents.

A dryer bread like a sourdough might need less time to toast compared to a moister bread like a challah, however, it wonโ€™t be drastically different.

Just keep an eye on the bread as it toasts.

    Tips for the Best Toast

    • Donโ€™t grease the baking sheet.
    • Watch the bread while broiling very carefully! It can go from perfectly toasted to burnt in a matter of seconds!
    • Once you flip the bread the untoasted side will take much less time to toast since itโ€™s already hot and dried out. Watch it carefully!
    • If you just want to dry out the bread (maybe for some pumpkin bread pudding), you can broil the bread but place the baking sheet on the lowest oven rack position and then watch the bread carefully.
    • As always please be careful the oven/broiler is very hot. Use oven mitts and tongs to flip the toast to prevent burning yourself.

    What to Put on Toast?

I love topping toast with garlic herb butter and jam or using it for making egg sandwiches, tri-tip sandwiches, and hot open-faced turkey sandwiches.

toasted sourdough with butter on melted on it.

How long do you preheat the oven? Because you said the total toasting time is 3 minutes, so I suppose preheating takes 1.5 minutes?

What if you have a gas cook stove,
Does it change the cook time for the bread?

The gas stove I've used in the past ran pretty true to temperature and acted like an electric oven. That being said, I'd keep a close eye on the bread the first few times and adjust the time to your preference of toasting. Sometimes ovens run hot or cold compared to what they should be (electric and gas alike). Have you noticed your oven needing to bake things longer than suggested times on recipes? Or does it tend to burn things that it shouldn't?
